The underwater setting is absolutely gorgeous, and does a fantastic job of making you want to explore. It’s actually the only survival game I’ve ever loved. Pip: Subnautica is my most-played game of 2018. And while many survival sims force you to endure hours of tedious busywork, the material requirements for building things in Subnautica are refreshingly generous, letting you actually get on with enjoying the game. When you find a strange island or a wrecked ship, you know there’ll be an interesting story attached to it, and maybe something that can be scavenged to help you out. But Subnautica’s beautiful, mysterious alien ocean is absolutely heaving with interesting, hand-crafted details to discover. Underwater survival game Subnautica-just given away for free on Epic's Store-is next on our list of GOTY awards. Since I have a moment with the topic, and without suggesting that this is a sufficient salve to all our interlocking global crises, I also recommend composting, gardening along permaculture principles, and sharing food with your community if you can. Subnautica's a good game, if you hadn't heard, and picking it up at 30 percent off during this sale would be a very reasonable thing to do. The sale runs until 4 pm Pacific on June 7, and you can find all of the participating games here. During the sale, 15 percent of Subnautica's profits will be donated to The Ocean Cleanup, an organization which is devising technology to capture and remove ocean plastics, and One Tree Planted will plant one tree for each copy of Playne sold. Two games are offering additional donations. The sale was set up by Fugl developer Johan Gjestland, and a portion of the revenue from participating games will be donated to "organizations like Greenpeace, World Land Trust and The Nature Conservatory."
Steam's latest sale comes in recognition of the UN's World Environment Day, and generally encompasses games which have water or greenery in them, such as Raft, Equilinox, Flower, and Samorost 3. Even worse than that, though, were the couple of occasions when I was swimming near the surface and my flashlight caught a glimpse of a white, leathery, serpentine body slither past several meters below me. If one of them catches you, you’re usually treated to a close-up of its toothy maw and terrifying, narrow eyes filling your field of view before it eats you alive. You usually hear them before you see them, wailing through the gloom in an eerie, haunting, distorted tone. Even in a submersible, they can take you out if you don’t execute some quick evasive maneuvers. Lurking in the depths are leviathans: enormous, serpent-like predators from which you have little chance of escape if you can’t get to a vehicle or some kind of shelter immediately. Add to this the fact the ocean floor might be hundreds of meters below you at any time and your visibility in the brine at night is close to nothing, and you may be able to understand why this game just about gave me a heart attack.īut it wouldn’t really be that bad if you discovered all the visions of ravenous beasts was all in your head, would it? Well, they’re not. If something that can swim faster than you is chasing you, where is there to go? Safety might as well be light years away.
This serves to make the ocean feel mostly inescapable. You only get a chance to dry your feet off in a few specific places that creep up above sea level, or if you build an underwater base for yourself. Subnautica's world is almost entirely covered by a giant ocean.

It is in large part because of this fear that first-person survival game Subnautica remains one of the scariest games I've ever played and its giant sea monsters rank highly on my list of memorable PC game villains. I was gripped with a primordial fear that I now know has a name: Thalassophobia. I have a distinct memory from when I was maybe 10 years old of opening my eyes underwater in a lake and not being able to see the bottom. Great moments in PC gaming are bite-sized celebrations of some of our favorite gaming memories.
